Selecting several complementary end tables for your living room can be a huge challenge.  You don’t want them to match but coordinating table legs, sizes and finishes can be daunting.  A simple and often overlooked solution is a skirted table.  They are a great way to provide additional table-top space while adding some softness to your room.  And the great thing is that you can change out the table skirt seasonally to give the room a fresh look. 

A sturdy table is a very important place to start.  Cock-eyed, wobbly tables are often what scares people away from skirted tables.  A good one is worth the extra money because you don’t have to worry about what you put on it and some designs also double as hidden storage.  This is where I bunk all my magazine piles when I am having company.    Here are a few models to consider.

Tables that are 24-30″ in diameter are appropriate as end tables or night tables.  Generally, you want the table to be a couple of inches higher than arm of your sofa or your mattress.  36″ Diameter tables can stand by themselves in a foyer or in the corner of your room.  They can also be used for dining tables in tight quarters.  Of course, you can use any table you already own but it may be more challenging to find a table skirt.

I recently saw that Ballard Designs had a nice selection of tablecloths.  They are also featuring the Terrific Trio which includes a table, tablecloth and glass topper.  The glass gives the table a really polished look and keeps the tablecloth safe from stains and wear.  If you purchase your own glass, go with 3/8″ with a beveled edge.

I don’t care for this style which tends to wobble on carpet and uneven tile floors.

This Mission Style table is solid and could be used with or without a table cloth.

Ballard’s tablecloths come in a variety of styles and patterns.  They have a great selection of fabrics that ranges from florals to solids and stripes. (Make sure to take advantage of their swatch program where you can order 10 free swatches and only pay $5.95 for shipping)  You can also send them your own fabric and they will create a custom item in 8-10 weeks.  I feel you can go two ways when selecting your fabric:

• Choose an accent fabric that you don’t use for much else in your room.  Something eye catching like a velvet, floral or animal print.
• Choose something neutral that will provide a great backdrop for anything you put on the table and will work with future fabric selections.

I prefer for the tablecloth to just graze the floor.  Go a little longer with extra fabric puddling the floor if that’s your style but never ever use a skirt that’s too short.  It looks skimpy and totally ruins the luxurious effect.

A modern kitchen with a track that features pendents and accent lighting.

What are the words that come to mind when I say the word track lighting? (clunky, 70’s, albatross on the ceiling)  What about the word monorail?  (sleek, fast, futuristic) 

Well, in the last 10 years, while most people were not looking, tracking light grew up and the awkward teenager became sexy and sophisticated.  Track lighting was a big innovation in the 60’s and it changed the face of stores, museums and art galleries.  No longer limited to the fluorescent lighting, track lighting could now be installed and not only spotlight the product or artwork but then be redirected when the items were moved.  This was HUGE!  In the 70’s, it was widely used in homes and unfortunately many people never bothered to replace the fixtures when new designs came along. 

This would be a good kit to use in a more traditional home so that you get the light you need but without drawing much attention to the fixture.

The designs available now are sleek, sophisticated and can be integrated into any design or style.  Two of the newer styles of track lighting are monorail and cable.  Monorail is flexible and can be installed in a variety of shapes.   The rail can actually be bent to the shape you need.  Cable lighting is very light and takes it a step further requiring less vertical support and it can bend around corners, beams and duct work.

It’s time to consider a track/monorail lighting system when you:

• Have a dark hallway with several pieces of artwork that that are lost in the shadows.
• Have high ceilings that are lacking recessed lights.
• Need task lighting for hobbies or reading.
• Have an unusually shaped kitchen island that needs lighting.
• Have a walk in closet and clothes that disappear for months at a time.

There are lots of choices when it comes to the track and the light fixtures and they are available in many finishes and styles.  Most systems can easily be installed in place of an existing light fixture or you can have your electrician wire a new location.

Some tips and points to consider:

• Buy all components from one manufacturer for ease of installation and to retain the warranty.
• Halogen bulbs can be used for general lighting.  But for accent lighting, you will need MR-16 bulbs which require a transformer on the fixture or in the wall.
• If your design is more traditional, purchase white lights and simple fixtures to blend in with your ceiling. 
• If your design is more modern, choose an accent finish and designer fixtures.
• In some cases, you can mix pendent lighting and heads on one track which gives you maximum flexibility.

Have you ever been to an architectural salvage yard?  Whether you are just curious, a treasure seeker or a serious renovator, you should give it a try.  My first visit was to a local spot, Adam & Eve, in West Palm Beach, Florida.  It’s one of those places that catches your eye as you drive past, because let’s face it - How many times do you see 100 toilets lined up like an army inside a chain-linked fence?  They have fantastic items from porcelain pedestal sinks and crystal chandeliers to intricately carved doors and hand-made ironwork.  Plus there are basics like reclaimed wood flooring and beams.  With so many classic homes being demolished to make room for cookie cutter communities, architectural salvage companies are overstocked with unbelievable treasures.

These vintage Majolica tiles would add a custom touch to your backsplash.

If you are going with a painted mantel, then purchase an antique one with great details as your starting point.

Many of the companies have gone online and they are posting new items daily and are always willing to arrange delivery for you.  If you want to hunt around on foot, then look in the Yellow Pages to find a dealer near you. Make sure to bring your camera because you are bound to find something you never knew you needed but now cannot live without.  Take a photo, some measurements and then check it out at home.  I promise it will be a fun afternoon.  And when you are ready to purchase, don’t be afraid to haggle.  They always want to make room for new stock.
